You may have heard this before, I used to give this as extra credit to my 1st year math students on thier mid terms.

Three men stop at a motel for the night. They approach the clerk who tells them that the room is Thirty Dollars, so they each give Ten Dollars to him and proceed on thier way.

Later the manager comes in and reminds the clerk that the rooms are on special for Twentyfive Dollars. The clerk sends the bellboy to the room with Five singles.

The bellboy tells the men that the room was only Twentyfive Dollars, since there is no good way to split that up, they gave the bell boy a Two Dollar tip and kept a Dollar each for themselves.

Now. If each man got back a dollar, this means that the room cost each of them Nine Dollars.

3 X 9 = 27

The bell boy got a two dollar tip

27 + 2 = 29

So, who got the other dollar?


The Clerk? The Manager? The Bellboy??????

This puzzle alone has killed many of my brain cells from hours of figuring out what is going on.

The misdirection is that the equation in the riddle is adding when it should be subtracting, trying to lead you to the incorect $30 total. Each of the men paid $9 so you have $27 total. The room cost $25 and they gave the bell-hop a $2 tip. (3x9)-2=27-2=$25 (room cost).

Each of the men paid $10
$30

Each of them received $1 back
$27

They tip the bell hop $2
$25

The main problem is, if you want to reach the $30 total you have to multiply $9 by 3 and then add the $1 refund each of them got back, not the bell-hop's tip.

oh geez, thats a much harder version of the thing my Grandpa used to do to me as a kid. he used to ask me "how many fingers do you have on your hands?"

of course i would answer "10". He would say "Wrong..." and count the right hand fingers "1,2,3,4,5" and the left hand fingers "10,9,8,7,6" what is 5 plus 6? 11 !!!!!!

he was also the grandpa who told me he would give me $20.00 if I could spoon food into my mouth, using only the silverware I was holding in that hand INTO my mouth without bending my elbow at all. I think that is still why, to this day, my neck has a crick in it.

There is this man, rather down on his luck, homeless. He likes to smoke however and has worked out a bit of a formula to satisfy his habit every day. These are the things that you should know about this man.

1. Never throws a cigarette away.
2. He can make one cigarette out of two ciggarette buts.
3. He gets up every morning and bums 20 whole cigarettes before lunch then sits down and smokes.

Question: How many whole cigarettes does he smoke in a day?

He never throws a Cigarette away, that includes butts, if he has been doing it for a while, he will have one butt left over from the previous day, and the math works out so that he combines that one leftover butt with the last of his Bummed cigarettes for the day and has one butt left over for the next day.

Ok - then the answer is that he smokes 40 cigarettes a day.
