HELP!!!

after the dx9c upgrade I noticed my pc acting funny.

during EQII my screen would flicker, go black for a second or two, and/or sometimes just freeze up for a 1-5 seconds. I attributed to the new graphics drivers in EQII but after backing up to a system restore point from weeks ago I still have the same problem.

when I uninstall my video card drivers I have (way less performance) none of the behaviors.

I reinstalled my drivers direct from the manufature's site and now it's back.

ANY multi-media causes glitches. picture files etc do NOT cause trouble (it seems) just animation. (upgraded my windows media player, still the same stuff happening)

when I start IE the screen blinks to black for a split second (only on the first time after a re-boot) almost like it is resetting my referesh rate or something.

does this sound like fried hardware or bad drivers or virus (norton fully updated) ? is it possible that my bios is out of whack? it is possible for a program like EQII (with it's performance settings, I didn't have this trouble until after I messed around with the performace tabs) to alter something on my PC that would cause this?

I don't really want to re-format my harddrive (although it could probably use it) but that would tell me if it's a software/driver problem or if it's the video card itself.

suggestions please!

turned off hardware acceleration (as per troubleshooter) and it seems to have settled down. performance seems a little slower.
what does hardware acceleration do? and is it possible that new drivers/dx9c would be conflicting with these settings?
bugs me when stuff just all of a sudden happens (as opposed to my "fiddling with the wires")

Yes it sounds like the video card is starting to go. What kind and brand is it? I would also check your motherboard manufacturer for a bios update, cause that's fixed a lot of video problems after updates that I've had in the past.

GEforce5200 128mb

it's a generic (no name) version (same chipsets etc as the nvidia name brand, just came in a "not for retail" box)

i will check for a bios upgrade 'cause I don't think it's the card, I am leaning towards a glitch with the DX9c.

sigh... oh well, needed a new PC anyways Exclamation

I doubt it's the card or dx9c. I'm going for bios or motherboard combination having problems with the new code I guess.

updated bios, but the version is only a few monthes newer and still a 2001 release (before dx8 even i am guessing).

with hardware acceleration off I am free of the glitches (gonna log into beta and see how it runs "as is"), although when I booted up tonight I did have sparkles of noise across the screen for a minute or two... almost like the thing needed to warm up (doesn't happen when booting after I've been running for a while). I would swear it's a bad hardware problem except it started immediately after I DL'd the dx9c patch... is it possible the stress of EQII overheated my card and fried it?

tried searching tech forums and such, doesn't seem like anyone else is having the same problems. any other thoughts before I format my HD (can't seem to get rid of dx9c any other way and I want to eliminate that as the problem before I through this whole machine in the trash)

Well you can't run EQII without DX9c, so I'm not sure what to tell ya. Typically when cards overheat they just stop working.

here's where I sit now...

updated my bios, everything seemed to be fine... rebooted (numerous times) after playing with graphics settings etc. things running decently...

get home from work today and do a cold boot... beep beep, BIOS checksum error... no keyboard detected... install system disk and press a key...

install boot disc, press key... nothing (refer back to no keyboard detected)

looks like the bios flash utility either installed the wrong bios or I have damage somewhere else (other than my video card which has a fan that is ceased up and several baked transistors that pop'd like popcorn...)

any thoughts on how I can wipe my bios and start from scratch? I have the factory discs but the manual only says "if you put in the wrong bios and get a blocked boot your pc will need servicing..."

HELP!

update:

getting new video card for WIFE's PC (amd 1.3) cause mine needs a new mobo (on top of vid card) PLUS her board supports upto 3 gig ram (mine was max 512...)

riddle me this,

where is the biggest bottleneck?

obvisouly the processor is LACKING (I can bump it up to 2 gig'ish fairly cheaply and will around xmas)

but am I better off to say dish out $100 on an ok vid card (128 with shader support) and $100 for another 512 ram

or

dish out the same $200 on a good video card (forgetting the ram)

where is the best place to spend the $$$ (video or ram???)

ya I would like to get a new proc, 3 gig of ram and a $500 video card but my kids like to eat...

choices:

$100 video card + $100 ram (taking 512 to 1 gig)
or
$200 video card (sticking with original 512 ram)

THEN in a few monthes

$200 upgrade processor to 2-2.5 (up from 1.3)
OR
cram in more ram (is more ram better than a faster processor? is there a point of no visable gains by adding more ram instead of upgrading processor? is this a run on post?)

It's hard to say really, they're all interconnected. I would be them in this order: Video > Ram > CPU GHz. I put CPU GHz last because you'll have very little difference between 2 GHz and 3 GHz, however, between 1.3 and 2 GHz there is a huge difference, such a difference that I'm not sure the video card or ram will make up for it.

So yea, in short I'm no help at all Sad

I was always told that RAM is usually a good thing to have raised first when it comes to gaming then video card, but then again i am no computer Wiz like Ludarian. just my 2 cents.... Very Happy
